Book B presents: What is Your Way? by Science of the Secondary
“How do you form your toilet paper pad? Do you fold neatly, layer naturally, scrunch a big bouquet or wind around the fingers? Are there standards as to how a toilet paper pad is formed? Did you learn this in school? Did your parents teach the ‘correct method? Do the most intimate of lovers know what each other’s toilet paper pad looks like?”
Book B is delighted to invite Science of the Secondary to Hong Kong for the first time, presenting two installation experiences ‘Café CUP’ and ‘What’s Your Way’ and a Publisher Talk.
What is Your Way? is an inquiry into the universally familiar, yet intimate gesture and method surrounding the formation of our toilet paper pad. This installation encourages visitors to try “forming other pads” and in turn, share their “own way” with others.

About Science of the Secondary
Science of the Secondary is an inquisitive approach towards uncovering implicit conditions that exist in our experience of the everyday. When speaking of the term ‘secondary’, publishers Atelier HOKO are referring to conditions and sensations that human beings are not conscious of in their day-to-day interaction with things and the immediate surroundings. Accumulating this rich and boundless field of knowledge, the research hopes to draw upon a renewed sensibility towards living, with much excitement and freshness.
About Science of the Secondary: Toilet Paper
The life of toilet paper is fundamentally short-lived; smeared with shit and flushed immediately after use, it is found in almost every toilet as a sign of hygienic assurance. Even though its absence is a major cause of panic amongst toilet users, the toilet roll remains a lowly object and ever so often a cause for embarrassment or awkward giggles when encountered or merely mentioned. Considering how excreting faeces is an everyday affair for all of us and half the world’s population cannot live without it, such sentiments towards a roll of tissue seemed rather immature.
About Atelier HOKO
Atelier HOKO (2002) is an independent research lab that focuses on the study of the growing disengagement between people, things and space. The atelier hopes to cultivate in people, an open-ness and ability to un-know, bringing about a heightened curiosity towards all phenomena by taking a fresh look at reality.
